I do think my clichés and analogies got a little muddled. My point is that left to their own internal forces, most companies (and people) would live their lives fat, dumb, and happy. In the business world, competition functions as the external sanity check that forces you to update your approach. It is not by coincidence that monopoly utility companies and government offices are famed for their backwardness in how they operate.
